Dear participants , dear readers, time is running out, we have reached the end of the round table. In our dicsussion, the picture of Vietnamese contemporary art is not painted with rosy colors. Being commercialized, imitating foreign trends, not able to reflect Vietnamese reality, not being contemporary, ethical crisis, etc. Additionally, there is no art public, no supportive art environement, lack of critics and of qualified information sources. These are frank and severe comments of the round table about Vietnamese art and Vietnamese artists.

With that common assessment, it seems opinions have been grouped themselves into two camps. The "traditionist" camp expresses its doubt against art trends coming from the West, and raises their caution about the danger of losing oneself and becoming "slaves" of Western theories and tastes. The "reformist" camp believes in the ability of a culture in selectively absorbing foreign influences, and demands new art languages in order to reflect the new reality. The existance of these two camps can also be observed in cultural discussions that are happening in Vietnam right now. Apparently this is natural given the dramatical transition Vietnam is undergoing today, and the debate between the camps is not going to end soon.

Although the round table has been sometimes very hot, bitter and uncompromising, I think that readers following the talk closely could not fail to recognize the interest and care of the participants for Vietnamese art. To be able to express and hear different opinions equally is one of the most important conditions for the richness and diversity in intellectual live. I hope that the round table, to an extend, was able to create that condition. I would like to thank all participants for their time and energy. Great thanks go to our readers who followed and contributed in the discussion. Especially, I would like to thank talawas members and friends who tirelessly supported with the translation during the whole time.

Although the round table is now closed, the topic art continues on talawas. Please watch the column "Visual Art" for new articles and please continue to discuss issues raised in the column.

I'd like to wish all participants and talawas readers good luck and all the best for the New Year Quy Mui. See you next time.
